This product is very well designed and constructed. I was able to charge the battery pack in about 5 or 6 hours with only partial sun. The charged battery pack then recharged my 2nd generation iTouch from almost empty to full in about 45 minutes. After charging my iTouch there was still enough power left in the battery pack to top off the battery in my 2nd generation Kindle (the Kindle battery was about half full to start).

Even though we seek the outdoors to “get away from it all” many of us cannot abandon all electronic tools and devices… be they GPSes, smart phones, music players, or the like. Personally, I have an android phone and it serves as all of the above. Keeping the battery charged can be quite a challenge in the back country or emergency situation when municipal power is not available.

The Goal0 is an amazing product – rugged, not terribly heavy, and very well thought out. The 2-panel Guide10 is a great size for the backpacker or 3-day hiker. My adventurer kit came with the battery pack, which can charge a device directly, or a battery pack (AA or AAA) for charging at a later time. It charges fast enough that you can charge up a full set of AA then a set of AAA in a given day of average sunlight.

With this device, a set of rechargeable AA and AAA (4 each) with a backup set, I have a setup that can keep my GPS, DroidX, Petzl headlamp, and hard-use flashlights all charged and operational for many, many years.

Survived Burning Man… good enough for me!, September 12, 2011

I took this kit out into the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, to keep my phone and nook charged during the Burning Man festival. For those who don’t know, that place is like the surface of Mars- constant dust storms and extreme heat are the norm there. Plenty of sunlight though! In the morning I would toss this panel onto the roof of my tent, where it would bake in 110 degree heat while charging. By the evening, the battery pack was ready to go and the panel was buried in playa dust- which cleaned off decently with a baby wipe. There weren’t any rainclouds in sight so I did not have to worry about exposing it to the elements. The panel also has lots of loops sewn into it that let you tether it wherever you need to.

I would recommend getting the combined battery + panel kit instead of just charging from the solar panel. As a general rule, use the solar panel to charge the battery pack, and use the battery pack to charge your gear. The panel’s output depends heavily on how much sun is hitting it- if anything gets between direct line of sight between the sun and your panels (a cloud, a person, etc) that output will drop dramatically. The battery pack will take any juice it can get from the panel, but modern cell phones and devices are picky and want a constant output to charge with. If you charge them directly from the panel, you will find that they will bounce from charging to discharging, or throw errors and refuse to charge.

If you are an outdoorsy person and you have a USB-charging cellphone, or you have a lot of AA-powered devices, this kit is for you.
